Sae had been kind of tired that morning. He had wandered around the castle from the wee hours of the morning till now, about 10 AM in an attempt to find something besides his completed works of Shakespeare to occupy his time.
He opened the door to the faculty lounge and saw no one. Carefully walking in Sae decided that here would be as good a place as any to stop his excursions. As he went to sit a song from Les Miserables appeared in his head. He began to humm the tune then he began to sing in almost a whisper:
"There is a castle on a cloud, I like to go there in my sleep. Aren't anyfloors for me to sweep, Not in my castle on a loud.
There is a room thats full of toys, There a hundred boys and girls. Nobody shouts or talks to loud, Not in my castle on a cloud."

Vincent stepped softly into the faculty lounge, very much in need of a cup of tea. He smiled when he saw Sae in the room, and grinned when he heard the song he was singing to himself. Ah, Les Miserables. It had been a while since he'd seen or listened to that one. Vincent sang out the next verse in reply as he approached, remembering when Sae had done the same to him not long before.
"There is a lady all in white Holds me and sings a lullaby She's nice to see and she's soft to touch She says: 'Cosette, I love you very much.'"

Sae flinched slightly in surprise at being joined in song. His head jolted towards the professor. "Oh, hello, Sir," he said standing in a greeting, nodding his head. A smile stretched across Sae's mouth. "How are you this morning?"
Sae was very grateful for the company. He would otherwise have to return to his thoughts, and right now those were full of unwanted things.

Vincent laughed. "Very well, thank you. Finally managed to snag a moment for myself. And you?"
He moved over to the counter and busied his hands preparing a cup of tea, watching Sae politely.

"Trying to occupy my time with something other than reading Shakespeare," Sae said rubbing his eyes, "If I read A Midsummer's Night Dream one more time I think my brain will burst in flames."
He walked over to Vincent and leaned against the counter. Ah, so he was making tea. Sae started to hum the tune of Sweeney Todd.

Vincent stirred sugar into his tea, smiling when he recognized the tune Sae was now humming. He certainly did have a thing for musicals, it seemed. Vincent began to grin again as he supplied the words for the tune.
"Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd: His skin was pale and his eye was odd. He shaved the faces of gentlemen Who never thereafter were heard of again. He trod a path that few have trod, Did Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street..."
Here he paused, waiting for Sae to continue with the next verse.

"The demon barber of fleet street. He kept a shop in London town. Of fancy clients and good renown and what if none of their souls were saved they went to their maker impecably shaved. By Sweeney, by Sweeney Todd the demon barber of fleet street.," Sae sung in his deep voice. His smile grew wider.
"You know that Musical?" he asked very pleased, "It's one of my favorites."

Vincent grinned. "I love that musical. I've always wanted to play Sweeney. My daughter always insists I'm too good-natured for the part, though -- too kind to play a murderer. But oddly enough she doesn't object to me playing the Phantom, who was a murderer as well." He shrugged. "Maybe it's because of the relationship I had with her mother."
He set down his spoon and picked up his mug, taking a slow sip of the hot tea. He really liked this mug; it was the one Jaebi had given him after his strange illness.

Sae narrowed his eyes as if examining Vincent. "Hmmm," he mused with a smile, "You do seem a little kind for the part, but I believe that anyone can act if they set their mind to the roll." He flipped his purple bangs out of his eyes and looked down at the floor. "I always was able to identify with Mr. Todd," he explained, "He had everything taken from him; it was totally out of his control. Then he just snaps and handles his new situation the best way he can."
Sae turned to look at the professor and said, "He, like the Phantom, are just missunderstood. Though the Phantom has a very different story."

"Indeed," Vincent agreed, nodding. "It would have gone far differently if Mrs. Lovett had told Sweeney the whole truth to begin with. Which makes me wonder what would have happened then. Or if he had succeeded in killing Judge Turpin on his first try, regardless."
He took another sip of tea, his expression thoughtful. Every story had its own "what ifs", a thousand of them. Changing even the smallest detail could have a huge impact on the rest of the story's direction. It reminded him of a film he'd heard about but never seen. What was it called, now... something about butterflies?

Sae looked up in thought. "Yes," he agreed, "every moment changes the future. That's why a great teacher of mine always said to let the past be just that, the past, and to set our sights on the future. If we focus too much on what has been then we will trip and destroy what will be." He smiled weakly, "Unfortunately I was never very good at taking his advise."
Sae examined Vincent's face and asked, "May I ask what you are thinking about so diligently, sir?"

"Just wondering how any story would have ended if certain details had been different," Vincent replied, half to himself as he was drawn from his thoughts. "If, say, Christine had decided to stay with the Phantom instead of going with Raoul, or... well, any of a thousand examples from any story in the world. Take your pick. But I suppose you're right -- we should leave the past where it belongs instead of dragging it into the present with us. The same goes for what might have been. We can never know, so it's better not to wonder too much, no matter how tempting it seems."

Sae nodded. "I always wanted to change the past, especially my own," he said hanging his head a bit, "There are just some things that even after fifty years, it's just hard to let go. I suppose that's one of the many reasons I picked up writing." He smiled at Vincent. "If you can't change the past in reality attempt to change it on paper," he explained, "After all, 'the pen is mightier than the sword' is it not?"
He shifted his weight off the counter. "That is what those of the theatre do, yes? They portray the words from paper to the real world, affecting the thoughts of those that watch." He chuckled, "Sorry, I've always been fasinated by that."

Vincent smiled and nodded. "Indeed, indeed. Don't apologize; I feel the same way. At times one needs to escape the troubles of one's own life, and what better way than to step into someone else's skin for a while? It helped me, especially after the death of my first wife. But some things are harder to let go of than others.
"What kind of writing do you do?" he asked, looking at Sae in interest. "Prose, poetry? Plays?"

Sae smiled, glad to have someone to talk to about his theatre "craze" as Ash called it. "A little of everything," Sae answered, "Mostly poetry. I'm working on finishing my first play and completing my first sonnet." He made a small sigh, "Shakespeare definately had his work cut out for him. There are times when I want to give up but something keeps pressing me on to finish."
"What about yourself, Professor?" he asked, "Do you write?"

"Not often," Vincent answered, shaking his head. "I've been thinking of doing some songwriting, though, and I've written one already as a gift for a friend. It's a rather personal piece, so you'll have to forgive me for not sharing it." He smiled apologetically. "I'd be interested to see some of your work sometime, if you're willing to share, of course."

Sae nodded, "I understand writings being personal. I wrote many of my works after a rather. . . " he paused searching for the right word. "I suppose 'traumatic' experiance. I'll bring you some of my work if you desire, but just try to keep in mind that I've changed a great deal since I wrote most of it."
Sae's eyes lit up, his voice becoming excited, "Actually, would you like to read over my play? It's nearly finished and it's still in it's rough draft stages. I would like to have some kind of input."

Vincent nodded in understanding. "You could definitely say that that's the case for the song I wrote as well." His face sobered for a moment as he sipped from his mug of tea again.
He brightened at the idea of reading Sae's work, and spoke up once he'd swallowed. "I'd be delighted to see some of your work. I'm afraid I don't have anything to share in return, though."

Sae waved his hand as if to dismiss Vincent's apology. "Don't fret about it, Sir," he said, "I'll just be glad to have someone read it. I've kind of hit a dead end at the moment." He scratched the back of his head. "I suppose it's because I'm no longer in that sate of mind or rather, I refuse to go back to it."

Vincent nodded. "Perfectly understandable. I'm sure many of us have times like that in our lives we'd much sooner forget.
"What are your plans for the day?" he asked, wanting to steer the subject away from things that might unintentionally stir up unwanted memories for Sae. "I'm afraid I have a busy day ahead of me. Grading homework, preparing for my wedding, and all that jazz." He smirked, wondering whether Sae would catch the musical reference.

Sae immediately got the referance and hummed the tune to "All That Jazz" with a smile.
"I'm working out times for the auditions for Dr. Faustus but other than that I don't have much else to do," he said, "Would you like any assistance. Or perhaps just some time to get your mind off things by belting random musical numbers to the sky?" He laughed and began to sing: "Come on, Babe Why don't we paint the town? And All That Jazz
I'm gonna rouge my knees And roll my stockings down And All That Jazz.
Start the car I know a whoopee spot Where the gin is cold but the piano's hot It's just a noisy hall Where there's a nightly brawl And All That Jazz!"

Vincent laughed and applauded Sae with a grin. "Nicely sung."
He hadn't watched Chicago in some time; this made him want to pull it out again. The tune of "Cell Block Tango" was starting to run through his head now, and Vincent resisted the urge to start humming it. If they ended up singing it, he didn't want to be the one speaking Katalin's verse -- he didn't know a word of Hungarian. He switched to a different musical entirely, and started to sing:
"My gift is my song And this one's for you And you can tell everybody That this is your song It may be quite simple But now that it's done Hope you don't mind I hope you don't mind That I put down in words How wonderful life is Now you're in the world..."

Vincent grinned at the way Sae's face lit up at this particular song, and sang a line in reply as Ewan McGregor's voice ran through his head. "I look around me and I see it isn't so, oh no..."

Sae's smile grew wider as he replied in song, "Some people wanna fill the world with silly love songs." He giggled, or at least the female voice that he was using allowed him to do so.
