Vincent decided that now was as good a time as any to speak up. "That's not the half of it. There's a definite line between 'interesting' and 'dangerous' -- all too often, events in this school seem to tend toward the latter. You really need to be on your toes around here. Things can get bloody, even deadly. I'm sorry to say that I'm not exaggerating on that point in the slightest."

Sae arched an amused eyebrow but he nodded, completely understanding. "Considering where the school is and who is attending, I can understand were things could become quite deadly," he said.
"After all my time spent in the peace of the 'human' world I could use a bit of excitement," he said with a half smirk, "besides the verbal jousting with my ward, I can say my life for the past thirty years has been rather lacking in conflict."
He looked at Vincent with curiosity as he asked, "What exactly has happened here before?"

"Oh, dear me. Where do I even begin..." Vincent ticked off the events on his fingers as he spoke, his voice growing increasingly cold and hard at the horrible memories.
"Last semester, within a matter of weeks, bad things happened in the dozens. One student fell from a roof, and soon afterward another attempted suicide. Both survived, thank heavens. Then a certain professor, known to the students as 'Creeps McGee', sexually harassed several students and faculty alike, resulting in the severe injury of one and the endangerment of many more, including my own daughter. The last of the incidents involving 'Creeps' ended with myself being injured and Creeps being killed. Not long afterward, strange and unforeseen circumstances on Halloween night, of which I am still not certain, resulted in the death of a student. That was all at the start of the school year, before the first of November."
He paused for a much-needed breath. "Not even a week after the tragedy of Halloween, I was off campus in Sacramento, on a fishing trip with Bolin Honghui, another professor. The first night we were there -- the first time I cast my line -- I unknowingly hooked a Merrow by the hair, and she dragged me under the water and attempted to drown me. Bolin dove in, killed her and brought me back to dry ground, where he got me breathing again after I had blacked out under the water from lack of oxygen."
He looked at Sae with an odd sharpness in his gaze. "Shall I move on to this semester, or is that enough of an example for you?"

Sae listened, intrigued as Vincent explained the events that had occurred. When the professor had finished Sae met Vincent's eyes. They seemed very harsh and Sae physically recoiled, backing away slightly. He held up his hands to show that he meant no harm and said, "Yes, Sir, that is plenty."
He glanced at Diana curiously, inwardly wondering if he had done something wrong as to deserve that stare from Vincent.

Vincent saw Sae recoil from him and sighed audibly, the harshness leaving his eyes to be replaced by weariness and apology as he looked away for a moment.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to seem so harsh. None of this should have happened, but all we can do is try to move on. It's been a terrible year by some accounts, and some things are more difficult than others to move on from. I'm sure you understand."

Sae nodded and continued to avoid the professor's gaze. "I understand all too well," he answered quietly, "There are things that shouldn't happen but they do anyway. In the end though, there is nothing you CAN do BUT move on."
He shifted his weight uneasily. He reached into his pocket to fiddle with a loose string inside as a nervous impulse. "I'm sure you all have experienced and have been forced to overcome a great deal."

Vincent nodded silently, knowing he'd caused the comfort level of the conversation to take a turn for the worse, and wondered how to rectify it. He didn't try to meet Sae's eyes again.
"Well," he spoke up, when the awkward silence had gone on for quite long enough. "That's quite enough talk of doom and gloom, don't you think? It hasn't all been bad. Occasionally the metaphorical sun does shine here, even if the real one never does."

Sae smiled weakly. "Yes, the metaphorical 'silver lining'?" he inquired, "May I ask what good things have occurred?" His back straightened a little as he said a bit more confidently, "Surely the good would equal or out weigh the bad, otherwise, why would this school continue to exist."

Vincent grinned. "Well, for one thing, there's our upcoming wedding, which the whole school has been getting excited about for weeks now. After many long years of estrangement from my niece, my relationship with her has taken a definite turn for the better this year. We were all very happy to see Creeps well disposed of after his reign of terror over the school, however bloody his demise was. Prior to almost drowning, I had a rather lovely surprise birthday party thrown for me by the school cook, which was quite a lot of fun. And earlier this semester I became a mage, much to my surprise."

Sae arched an amused eyebrow, "You became a mage?" He touched his chin with his hand. "How did that come into events?"

"Quite strangely," Vincent answered, his gaze unfocusing a little as he reminisced the odd event.
"It was mid-February, as I recall. I was on patrol in the courtyard when I heard someone screaming, and ran to help. I found Ellie, the school healer, along with one of the students. Ellie had been sleepwalking straight toward the forest, and the student had managed to reach her in time to hold her back, but she was screaming and hurting herself. I later learned that she was under a Fae enchantment.
"Not knowing what else to do, I sent the student for help and too it upon myself to try and keep Ellie safe until help arrived. I held her down to keep her from further hurting herself or me, and sang to her to soothe her. At that point, my magic manifested through my voice and broke through the enchantment on her, freeing her from her nightmare. Ellie woke up and promptly began to panic and hyperventilate, and I sang to her again to calm her. She fell into a normal sleep. Another professor arrived soon after, and we took her to the infirmary to get her wounds looked after.
"It wasn't until about a week after that that I finally found out what I was, in a rather unfortunate way. I was walking with another of the professors, a vampire, when I broke my nose against a doorframe while walking through a door." He winced and rubbed his nose at the memory of that pain. "My companion, unfortunately, got a faceful of my spurting blood went on a bit of a 'trip'. I managed to keep him from harming himself or others until my nose was fixed and I was able to get help. Ellie helped to be sure the effects of the blood wore off fairly quickly, much to all of our relief.
"I went to speak with Ellie and Smoke later that day after my classes were finished, and they both confirmed what I had found out. When I demonstrated my magic for Smoke, he told me that my power is different from that of most other mages, and tends to be more akin to the power of the Fae. I'm still not entirely sure of the extent of what I can and can't do with it, but it's proving very interesting to experiment with."

Sae winced as well at the mention of the blood incident. He covered his mouth with his hand and muttered, "I understand that predicament."
He listened to the rest of the story intently. At the end he nodded. "I see, that is very interesting," he mused, "And you had no family history of magic?"

"None that I know of," Vincent replied, shrugging and spreading his hands. "I imagine it might have as much to do with desire as with genetics. I always used to wonder what it would be like to be a mage, and now I am. So there you are, I suppose."
He grinned to himself, remembering the look on Smoke's face when he'd first demonstrated his magic for the other professor.

Sae tilted his head to one side, moving his bangs out of his face. "If I am not imposing," he said quietly, "May I ask you to . . . well, demonstrate your magic for me?"
He looked at Vincent once again. That was something to think about. If anyone wanted to, huh? Did that mean that if someone did not want to be a mage they could lose their powers? He sighed quietly, that was for mages, not vampires.

Vincent nodded, grinning. "I'd be glad to."
He looked around the room for inspiration, wondering what he could work with. He could easily do something he had done before and knew would work, but there was something much more fun and exciting about trying something new. He'd done a fair few things with physical magic... but what about mental magic? That could be interesting... He had a few songs in mind that would be perfect for such things.
He turned back to Sae, smiling as he spoke to him again. "This might sound like an odd request, but would you mind if I worked my magic on you? I want you to think of a very sad or painful memory, and I'm going to do my very best to cheer you up."

Sae arched his eyebrow and nodded. "Sure," he replied his voice unsure. He went to sit in a nearby arm chair and thought.
He didn't have to wait long for thoughts to come to him. His bad memories returned in waves. Blood everywhere, people screaming, fire and worst of all a cold heart watching with no mercy or remorse. Sae shivered slightly and bit his lip.
Part of him had to force himself to stay in the room. "I'm ready when you are, Professor," he managed to whisper.

Vincent watched uneasily as Sae moved to sit down in an armchair and remained there, shivering. His pain was clearly written all across his face; Vincent wondered with remorse just what horrible memories Sae had chosen to think of. It would probably take more than a couple of lines to dispel that.
Clearing his throat and moving to stand beside Sae, Vincent looked down at him and began to sing, focusing his magic on Sae's mind and trying to lift his spirits.
"Don't give up; It's just the weight of the world. When your heart's heavy, I, I will lift it for you...
Don't give up, Because you want to be heard. If silence keeps you, I, I will break it for you.
Everybody wants to be understood-- Well, I can hear you. Everybody wants to be loved; Don't give up, Because you... are... loved..."

Sae could hear Vincent's voice through his own morbidthoughts. It began to resonate and fill his mind. It . . . helped, oddly enough, though he could not understand why.
His muscles slowly began to relax, and his arms quit shaking along with the rest of him. Even though the yells of pain still echoed in his head he was able to push them back. He began to focus on his breathing, calming himself along with the assurance of Vincent's voice. He remained still for a few moments.
A hint of a smile pulled on the right corner of SaeRyun's mouth. "Hmmm, that is interesting," he mused.

Vincent smiled as Sae slowly began to relax and stop shaking. He stopped singing and watched the vampire silently for a few moments, seeing him start to smile again. Vincent wasn't quite sure if his power would work differently on vampires than on humans, but what he'd done seemed to have worked.
"How are you feeling?" he asked softly.

Sae looked up at Vincent. "I'm ok," he said quietly, "Just have to refocus." He rubbed his face with his hands, mentally pushing the thoughts back into that corner. Behind the door and locked tightly, where they belonged.
He sighed and stood, looking at Vincent. "Would you like to know the outcome of our experiment, Sir?" he asked with a soft smile.

Vincent nodded, giving Sae a once-over, glad to see that he seemed fine. Vincent trusted the man's assessment of his own feelings, after all, and he didn't see Sae as the type to lie.
"I would very much like to," he replied with a smile.

Sae pondered for a moment, trying to put his feelings into words. "Well, I probably picked way to strong of a thought for your magic to be truly effective," he said, still thinking, "but your voice seemed to pierce through my thoughts and help me block them out." He nodded, remembering, and confirmed, "Yes, that's about it."
He turned to Vincent again with a smile, "It is a very interesting power that you have there, Sir. And I'm sure it can be very useful."

Vincent nodded slowly, now even more curious about what Sae's unpleasant thoughts had been, but knowing it was definitely not his place to ask. Still, he was glad his magic had been somewhat effective.
"It has been quite useful," he agreed, remembering Ellie. "I'm very curious to find out what I'll be able to do when I learn more about my power. There aren't many here who know much about it, so I've mostly been teaching myself through experiments, much like the one I did a moment ago."

Sae could tell that Vincent was probably curious as to what memory he had chosen to remember, but this was neither the time or the place to be discussing such dark things.
He smiled as he replied, "Well, you seem to have a new kind of magic, one that no one really knows anything about." His smile broadened as he continued, "It's almost like a story in a fiction book, your quest to discover more of your power. If you ever need another Guinea pig, I'm usually open to figuring out the unknown."

Vincent smiled and nodded. "It is, isn't it? Smoke was able to tell me a little of what he knew, but I'm sure there's much more to learn. I'd be happy for assistance."
The idea of a literal quest for knowledge, right out of a fantasy book, was a rather intriguing one. Vincent saw himself striking out boldly into Faerie, eager to learn of his magic from those who might know more about it than mortals would, since it bore some resemblance to their own. Would he have to go alone, or could he have a faithful companion come along with him into that strange world? Maybe a whole Fellowship?
