Artificial snow swirled around the room that was once the gym, now enchanted to look like a vast winter wonderland. The ceiling was spelled dark blue and star-spangled, a nearly perfect depiction of the night sky. The center was a large stone area, wide enough for an outdoor ballroom. Around it, benches and tables were arranged, complete with punch, hot chocolate, and mediocre catering-style refreshments, including gingerbread-men and small fuzzy looking desserts that looked somewhat like snowballs.
Beside the gym door, the rules for the ball were tacked:- The dance is couples-only. To prevent people from maneuvering around this rule, one person in the couple MUST be in a skirt. The rule applies regardless of the genders of those involved.
- Chaperones will be standing by. If any chaperone thinks there is anything inappropriate happening, the chaperone is authorized to use whatever disciplinary measures deemed appropriate. It is up to the chaperone's discretion what qualifies as inappropriate conduct.
- Please refrain from using the refreshments as projectile weapons. They are to be eaten, and used for no other purpose.
- This is a semi-formal affair. Appropriate dress includes dresses, skirts and blouses, slacks, and collared shirts. Anyone not meeting the requirements will be asked to leave.

Rudeth entered near the beginning of the dance, his date close behind, the light sounds of Christmas pop music filling the air. If there was a DJ of some sort, they were nowhere to be seen; either someone was working the sound from out of sight, or the headmistress was running off her iTunes. Rudeth was betting on iTunes.
Rudeth was dressed from head to toe in an extravagant white tuxedo he had stumbled upon in the costume room and borrowed from Professor Smoke -- with permission, of course. The suit was cleanly pressed, and Rudeth's shoulder-length hair was tied back at the nape of his neck rather than hanging loosely like usual. The dance may have only been semi-formal, but that was no reason for Rudeth to dress down.
He led his date leisurely to one of the refreshment tables, pouring cups of hot chocolate for both of them. He handed the cup to Aritha. "I hope you don't mind, but I wasn't able to buy your gift yet," he said, grinning sheepishly. "I'll be able to pick it up over the break, though, so I should have it for you by the time I see you in January."

Aritha smiled and shook her head, "Why would I mind? I wasn't expecting a gift at all. I will have to make you something and have it ready for when school is back in session."
She was in an equally elaborate red and white dress, her long white hair done up elegantly. She'd gotten the idea from the odd dream they'd had on Halloween. She couldn't remember much, but clothes were something she knew well. It had taken her forever to get it just right; she'd put the last stitch only an hour before. Taking the hot chocolate easily, she just smiled brightly at him.
"I will just have to make it very special for you," Aritha teased.

Ian had seen some pretty spectacular Christmas decorations, but the school gym had to be the best he'd ever seen. He walked through the door with Natalie on his arm, staring in awe at the stars in the ceiling. Once he'd finished taking in the scenery, Ian turned his attention to the dance floor. Very few people had shown up. Ian nervously swallowed. The less people were there, the harder it was for Ian and Natalie to blend into the crowd.
"I told you we should have shown up late." Ian grumbled to Natalie. "There's almost nobody here."

Natalie sighed and gave Ian an amused look. It had taken a lot of work, but she had finally found a collared shirt and pants that looked good on him. She had also picked out his tie - blue, to match the color of her dress. But no matter how he looked, he was always going to be the same nervous Ian, and the more sociable Natalie was determined to get around that. Ian's paranoia was not going to ruin her evening.
"We will be fine." She said sharply. "What are you hiding from, anyway?"

Ian glanced back over his shoulder. "Oh, you know... It's couples only, but... I mean, a piece of paper never stopped him before..."

"Stop it." Natalie snapped, reaching over and slapping Ian on the back of the head. "For one night, I want you to stop thinking about him. I swear, some days I think you're dating him rather than me." Then her smile took over and she laughed. "Now, come on. I know you're dying to get to the refreshment table and I want to get a few good conversations in before we start to dance..."

Jason walked slowly into the gym, hand in hand with Zeph. He was wearing an emerald green satin gown that reached down to his ankles, with one strap over his left shoulder. A hairclip set with a gem of the same color held a few stray curls back from his face, and a pair of high heels lent a few inches to his height.
Looking around the gym, he noticed not very many people there yet. The decorations were stunning; the ceiling looked like the night sky, and fake snow swirled around his ankles. He couldnt help but grin. "Professor Smoke's done a really good job in here."

Rudeth grinned. "I'd rather have something you've made than something you bought, anyway," he replied. "If there was anything I was actually capable of making, I'd make something for you instead."
He sipped at his hot chocolate, letting it warm his hands. "I had planned to write a song for you," he continued, "but it still needs a lot of work, so I might just save that for Valentine's Day instead. I've more or less got the piano part finished, but the lyrics don't sound right yet."
He sat his hot chocolate down on the table and extended his hand to her. "Would you like to dance?" he asked. "I know 'Jingle Bell Rock' isn't the most romantic song on the world, but, well." He grinned.

Zephyros nodded, holding his boyfriend's hand rather tightly. He glanced up at him, meeting his eyes with a smile. "Hardly anyone is here. There's Aritha and Rudy. I thought maybe they were going to get together after that cooking class. It was adorable the way she was flirting with him and not even realizing it. You think the way she teases me is bad..."
He looked at Jason's heels and sighed, "Like you weren't already taller than me, you just had to add a few more inches."

Jason laughed. "I like heels, give me a break. You're still growing, you have plenty of time to shoot past me. Oh, hey, there's Ian and Natalie." He nodded to the couple heading toward the refreshment table. "Ian looks good in that outfit. His tie matches Natalie's dress. Nice."

Aritha put her cup down and took his hand, grinning. "I would love to dance. In these heels you might have to catch me though," she teased, pulling him out onto the dance floor.
"Just try to keep up. I dance for a living." Kissing his cheek, she moved to let him lead, her grin still teasing.

"And your dress matches my eyes and is at about the same level," Zeph said with a sigh. He looked around and led Jason to the refreshments table, getting them both drinks. "Rudeth must have asked Aritha to dance. She's going to exhaust him. Trust me, I've danced with her. That girl can dance forever."
He grinned over at Jason. "But I bet I can dance longer than you can."

Post by Hitoshi Gilespi on Dec 22, 2009 3:37:08 GMT -5
Hitoshi slipped into the gym just in front of Alex, glancing over the decorations. He wasn't usually the sort to go to school dances, or any other social functions for that matter, but since Alex wanted to go badly enough to agree to wear a skirt, the least he could do was oblige him. They were at least here together, after all.
The refreshments looked sorely disappointing, but the enchantments were so well done that Hitoshi could have easily believed they were in a snow-covered park. Hitoshi scooped up a handful of snow. "My grandmother does something like this on Christmas," he explained. "The snow. She's done it every year since I can remember."

"That's nice. She does it outside, though?" Alex would have very much liked to wear a nice, simple collared shirt and slacks, or something else strictly within the requirements of semi-formal. Unfortunately, he was freezing- despite the gym not being all that cold- so he ended up in a thick cotton shirt, a jacket, a skirt and pants (blasted dress code), and in hopes he could get away with it, a nice matching winter hat.
"I mean, it's beautiful in here, though. The music is mediocre, the refreshments look b- ooh, are those brownies? let's get some brownies- err. Well, I like it. The company's great." He flashed Hitoshi an impish grin and took his hand, dragging him over to the brownies. Refreshment table. Sugar.

Jason raised an eyebrow and grinned down at Zeph. "You're on, Twinkle-toes."
He took a sip of his drink and licked his lips, looking over at Ian and Natalie and smiling in greeting. "Hey, Ian, Natalie. How are you guys?"

Natalie returned Jason's smile. "We're doing fine. Ian was just getting ready to say how nice you look." Keeping her eyes on Jason, she elbowed Ian in his side. "Ian. Say something nice about Jason. Like about his dress."

Ian gawked blankly at the boy in front of him. "But... he's a guy..." He whispered to Natalie. "And he's wearing a dress..." But seeing the look Natalie was giving him, he sighed. "Hello, Jason. You... look..." Ian gulped. "...very... nice?"

Jason laughed awkwardly. "Thanks... I know, it's weird, right? Not every day you see a guy in a gown. Or heels, except the new history professor whose name I can never pronounce right. But anyway... You guys look great too. Having fun so far? Not that the party's really started yet..."

"Thanks." Natalie said, smiling. "You'll have to excuse Ian. His only real friends are books. And he hasn't been at Dunehelden as long as I have, so he hasn't seen things like guys in dresses."
Natalie was, of course, much more well-adjusted than Ian to life at Dunehelden. And she was a social person by nature, unlike Ian. So she lived for things like this dance. "We've only just arrived ourselves, so we haven't had much of a chance to have fun yet. How about you? Are you enjoying yourself?"

Vincent strolled into the gym with Diana on his arm, grinning at the sight of the decorations. Smoke never had been one to under-deliver. The star-strewn blue sky was the exact shade of Diana's dress, and the fake snow glittered realistically under the lights.
He glanced around the room, seeing that most of its occupants were clustered around the refreshment table; shrugging one shoulder, he started to head in that direction himself, watching the students with interest. Was that Jason wearing a green dress? It suited him.
"Good evening," he greeted the general populus, coming closer to the table and pouring himself some hot chocolate.

"Usually. It's never inside on purpose, at any rate--oof!" What on earth had Alex this hyper? Was he really that happy to be at this ridiculous dance?
Hitoshi let himself by dragged to the refreshments table. "You seem to be in absurdly good mood," Hitoshi commented, debating over the hot chocolate. "That reminds me, I have part of your Christmas gift."
Hitoshi fished an elegantly decorated tin box from the inside pocket of his jacket, the top painted with images of kittens playing with garlands and seasonal designs in red and green. "There's not much of it, so I'd try to conserve what's there. It took me a while to get the recipe right. You'll get the other part when my family exchanges gifts."

Alex grabbed and nommed a brownie. It was... wow. Mediocre. How disappointing. "I am! I really am. I love being social, silly; you haven't noticed?"
The tin caught Alex's eye, and he looked curiously at it. Kittens? He got me a tin of-
Recipe-
He dropped the brownie on the table and opened the tin. His eyes widened seemingly to the size of small moons, and he couldn't help himself but leaned over and gave Hitoshi a kiss. Conveniently enough, at that moment, a sprig of mistletoe was floating over their heads. After only a second, Alex realized what he had done, and blushed, looking away.
"Oh, Jason!" He saw the other boy standing there- he didn't remember why he liked Jason, but he did. "Hello. Having a nice time so far?"
He slipped the box of peppermint bark back into his pocket to savor it once there was less talking and socializing to do.

Jason looked over at Alex and smiled. "Hey, Alex. Yeah, I'm having fun. It's gorgeous in here, isn't it? Professor Smoke did a really good job with the decorations."
He eyed the floating sprig of mistletoe curiously, leaning over and kissing Zeph lightly on the lips when it passed over their heads.
