Jason stretched out on a bench in the courtyard, then bent his legs up a little and leaned his sketchbook against his thighs. He twirled a charcoal pencil between his fingers for a few seconds, trying to decide what to draw; then an idea came, and he smiled and put pencil to paper.
Slowly but surely a man's face began to take shape on the blank white page. Short dark hair and dark eyes, a long, straight nose and a mouth that had a smile hidden in the corners. It was the face of a soldier, a husband and father -- Jason's father, Captain Casper Hiller.
Jason smiled and sighed quietly, pausing and lowering his pencil for a moment as nostalgia overtook him. He missed his family, all of them: his father, mother and older sisters. It was strange to think that he had last seen them over Christmas break; it didn't feel like so few months had passed.
He continued sketching, adding smaller details like the little scar right under his father's left eye, where a piece of shrapnel had wounded him during a war. He was lucky to have kept his eye, Jason thought. He was lucky in a lot of ways.

Ozora was bored. Bored bored bored. Even flying was getting boring, and that was saying something.
He'd finished all of his homework, his roommate was busy getting ready for that bloody trip that would have been boring because Ozora would have been forced to remain human the entire time. In his other form, Ozora circled, then spotted something that looked interesting. Ozora loved his other self's sharp eyes.
Pretty sketch, of an attractive man, and it was being drawn by a very pretty boy. Something in the back of Ozora's mind reminded him that this particular pretty boy was fairly firmly attached to another pretty boy, but Ozora wasn't going to do anything untoward.
Not with that reminder, anyway. Which was a pity because Jaymie was obviously not interested. Flaring his wings, Ozora landed on the back of the bench and watched him, his very blue eyes staring at the paper with an intensity only a predatory bird could manage.

Jason looked up at a rustling noise above him, and jumped a little when a rather large, very white hawk landed on the bench beside his shoulder. Its eyes were a curious shade of very bright blue; its gaze was as intense as its eye color.
Jason eyed the bird quietly for a few seconds, thinking that it was probably one of the other shapeshifters, but he couldn't have said whom. It couldn't be the groundskeeper; he was an entirely different bird. It was just sitting there and watching him, with those rather unnerving blue eyes.
"Hello?" he ventured warily.

Ozora hopped off the bench, flaring his wings again. An odd shimmering fog that seemed to come from his feathers swirled around him, becoming opaque and growing to the form of a person, then coalesced into a tall Indian with the same very blue predatory eyes. "Hullo. Sorry, didn't mean to freak you out."
He grinned at Jason, leaning back over the bench. "That's a lovely sketch there. Looks like someone you know well."

Jason watched curiously as the hawk hopped of the bench and was enveloped in a shimmering fog, which dissipated to reveal a tall, handsome boy with dark skin, blindingly white hair and the same bright blue eyes as the hawk, who looked about Zeph's age.
"That's okay," he replied with a smile, shifting a bit to give the boy more room to lean on the bench. He smiled at the compliment. "Thank you. It's my father."

Ozora sat next to him, nodding slightly. "Well, that explains why you know his face so well then, wouldn't it? Name's Ozora."
He ran a hand through his hair, flicking the blue feather, that appeared to be one of his own dyed a blue that was nearly as intense as his eyes, out of his eyes. His coat was gold today, his undershirt a deep red, and his pants blacker than black. When Ozora picked colors, he picked the most intense, brilliant shade he could find, and was nearly religious about taking care of the clothes in such a way that they didn't fade. The faint hint of roots he'd had at the beginning of the semester had been bleached out, and his hair was carefully braided to keep out of his face and the feather where he put it.
He couldn't quite place what this boy was. He didn't give the same feel as a mage... ah, there it was. There was definite, though at the moment not too obvious, canine movements about him. The boy was probably either Werewolf or lycanthrope. Ozora couldn't tell which, though his own 'type' was probably obvious by now. There was about only one shape-shifting type that as a human didn't have outward signs.

Jason smiled and nodded, looking at the boy with interest. His clothes were brightly colored and looked very well-cared for; there was hardly a wrinkle nor a sign of wear or fading in them. His hair was very interesting as well; had he dyed it that white, or bleached it? It couldn't have been natural, like Alex Meriweather's or that tiny albino vampire professor's.
He held out a hand when the boy gave his name. "Nice to meet you, Ozora. I'm Jason."

Ozora shook his hand, grinning. "Hullo, Jason. University, right? I'm academy, obviously. I wish I could draw like that..."
He looked at the sketch admiringly. "I'm best at picking clothes for me to wear, but I can't sew or do anything really lasting when it comes to art or anything. Unless you count fallible memories as lasting."

Jason smiled and nodded. "Ja, I'm in the university. A freshman. I've always enjoyed art... mostly sketching and painting. I love to paint. You might have seen my work around the school.
"No, I suppose not," he murmured at the comment about memories. "What kind of art do you do, then?"

Ozora thought for a moment, then nodded. "I think I have, actually. Yours always seems to be the more cheerful. There's a werewolf whose art is up a lot too, but his always seems... sad, or morbid somehow. It's always beautiful... yours too, but in a happy way."
He grinned when Jason asked him what art he did, then struck a pose. "Performance art. Mostly, I'm a show-off and a clown."
Turning back to grin at Jason, he shrugged slightly. "At least, most of the time. Right now... no classes and few to show off too."

"Danke," Jason smiled at the compliments. "Yeah, that'd be Seth Larisha you're talking about. I like his art a lot, but it's so dreary most of the time."
He grinned at Ozora's choice of hobby. "Nothing worse than an actor without an audience, huh? That's a shame."

" 'Nothing's sadder than the tears of a clown'," Ozora quoted with an overly-tragic expression and a hand over his heart. Then he grinned at Jason and shrugged.
"Seth... Larisha. That last name has to be made up. I mean, really. Mine's spelled funny, but it's still Ryan. I like his symbolic stuff most of the time. When he paints the tragedies or something like that, it's lovely, but... it always seems so extremely sad. The man can even make landscapes heartbreaking. It's impressive, but... also rather DEpressive."

Jason nodded in agreement. "I know what you mean. I think it all comes down to personal style. Some people just draw or paint things differently than others. Seth and I could paint the exact same thing and it would probably give two completely different effects to the same person."

Ozora nodded. "Yeah, I bet. It's kinda funny, actually. How two people can make such similar things so different without even trying. Of course, mine would have no similarity to the original subject, so I don't think my opinion should necessarily mean much."
He smirked at Jason, tilting his head slightly with that very swift bird-like motion. He probably spent too much time as a bird; it was beginning to affect all sorts of his mannerisms.

"That's art for you," Jason laughed softly, stretching his legs out again and bringing them back closer to his body. "Different strokes for different folks."
He looked at Ozora in curious amusement as the boy smirked and tilted his head a little to the side, looking very much like the bird Jason had first seen him as. It was always a bit odd when a shapeshifter's animal attributes began affecting their human side, and Jason, being a lycanthrope, was no exception. Even though there was technically no sun or moon in this place, he still acted more and more wolfish as the moon waxed. It was a good indication of when he was going to change completely -- he didn't need a calendar to figure that out. You just knew.

Ozora nodded, looking up at that depressing sky. "Actors are the same way. No two people ever play Robin Goodfellow in A Midsummer Night's Dream the same way, for example. Or Lysander. Or Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. It's just the human element, I guess."
Ozora ran a hand though his hair.

Jason nodded. "Everybody's unique, not just artists and actors. Even identical twins sometimes act differently. Take Remus and Romulus Turner, or the Aetai brothers, or Rudy and Thrall Volkova -- God rest Thrall's soul," he added softly. "Or any other pair of twins you care to name. Rarely are they completely the same, personality-wise. The Aetais are all very, very different from each other."

"The Aetais aren't anything like what I would call identical, in any way. The Volkovas were definitely not identical in personality, and I don't really know the Turners, but I think I might have seen them around," Ozora said, shrugging. "And I know, but... bah, I can't put what I want to say in words. I probably haven't learned the words I want yet."

Jason grinned. "When you can't find the words to say what you what you want to say, maybe a change of subject is in order. Ozora is an interesting name... Where are you from?"

"I'm American... but my mother was Indian. My father was an American soldier, and when he married my mother, he had to take her with him. My mother was of mid-caste, but I'm lower than the lowest; I'm only half-caste. In Indian, I'd be basically a bug."
He shrugged, "My name is Japanese, though. It means 'Big Sky', which is perfect considering what I am."
He grinned, shifting his position to better look at Jason as he spoke. "My shifting comes from Mom's side. Her grandfather could do it, and my father's got people who could too, but none of them were ever birds. I'm basically one of those magical experiments. Or more accurately, a descendant of. I think it's a hell of a lot easier than being Chosen, or a few of the other ways."
Then he realized he might have been being rude. After all, Ozora had no idea what kind of shifter Jason was. What if he was Chosen? Or worse, the lycanthrope Ozora had first hesitantly identified him as. A blush formed beneath his dark skin.

Jason nodded. "It must be nice to be able to change completely at will, and not be forced to change at certain times. Lycanthropy is hard like that. I hate the full moon transformations, especially here. Faerie twists time all around, it makes it hard to tell exactly what time we'll change. And losing human reasoning is a pain, too."

Ozora inwardly winced. Well, I really put my foot in it that time, he thought.
"I guess I can imagine that. Wild animals tend to fear humans, and you're usually surrounded by them no matter what phase the moon is in. You've got a boyfriend, don't you? Has he ever been... nearby? Would you know him, do you think?"
Then he winced visibly. "Sorry, that was rude of me to ask."

"He's been nearby a few times," Jason nodded. "Occasionally other friends are there instead. No one's complained yet that I've freaked out and bitten them, so that's something of an indication that things are okay," he smirked.
"It's hard to say whether or not I know them for who they are; a wolf's mind is very different than a human's. I see other lupiform lycanthropes as kindred, and my human friends as just that -- friends. Neither threat nor prey nor kin. It's a bit hard to explain."

"So you wouldn- Never mind, that's not a polite thing to ask," he flushed, biting his lip.
He looked away. "I guess it would be. Hard to explain. I don't have anything like that. I'm human, with human intelligence. I guess there are a few small instincts, and I find that the longer I spend as a bird, the more... bird-like I act, but it takes a long time."

Jason nodded. "I act more and more wolfish as the moon waxes, and besides that I have a few somewhat wolf-like personality traits that I've had drilled into me since long before I was bitten. I come from a family with a very clearly-defined sense of social order, and that seems to be a wolf-like thing. Pack hierarchy and all. My father is a soldier from a long line of soldiers, and he makes sure everyone in my family knows their place and respects his as the head of the household."
