"Sympathetic people, I mean. People soft-hearted and willing to listen to him, you know, like me, until he stood in front of the woman who scared my nephew half to death and told me Jonathan was his son."
He frowned at Alyn. "I'm sorry about all this. I shouldn't have... I thought whatever she might do, you could just handle it and, well, you did, but... this was not the best way to introduce the twins to Dunehelden, needless to say." He paused and pondered for a moment. "You did handle this with remarkable maturity. I did want to make it up to the twins for this- do you have any suggestions? You, I think, also deserve something."

Alyn was momentarily taken aback by the question. "The twins...I think the two of them would enjoy having a day with their uncles. The transition is extreme for them, and they don't know anyone. They're used to having their parents with them all the time."
Alyn hesitated. "I can't think of anything else."

Alex nodded, considering this. They didn't really know anyone here- except their extended family, some of whom were more social and could potentially introduce them to people. He wondered if Ai, Jack, or Kyu wouldn't mind taking the job.
"I suppose they are both introverts," he mused. "That sounds like a good idea. I'm sure they wouldn't mind more of Hitoshi's cooking, and there's plenty of books and games to get their minds on." He shrugged, sighed, and leaned slightly against his husband, looking blankly at the wall.

"That sounds reasonable," Hitoshi replied, his arms going loosely around Alex's waist. "Perhaps a few days before the semester starts we could set aside some time for them."
The time had gotten away from them a bit, and they still needed to go attend to their resident miscreants. Something told him he wasn't going to have a chance to spend time with his husband today after all.
"Come on," he sighed. "We have things to do."

Akio reached the door, Alyn fast asleep as he carried her. Akio paused, spending a moment debating with himself as to how to knock on the door. He didn't want to use his head. Or his shoulders-- that may or may not wake up Alyn. So, he settled for his foot. Twisting his ankle a bit, Akio kicked the inner turn of his heel against the door as one might kick a soccer ball.

It took Alex a moment to realize he was awake, and that the sound at the door was real. He pulled his arms out from under Hitoshi and got up to grab a houserobe.
If this was Veronique again, he was going to open up a hole in the very stone beneath her and toss her on top of her little pet in the dungeons.
With bleary eyes and dishevelled countenance, he opened the door to see a large teenage boy holding his daughter. Had they been in the physical world, the glare he gave the boy could have reversed global warming.
"You have five seconds to explain why I shouldn't call and wake your mother. Go."

Akio's eyes widened. "I was making a sleep aid out of the tea leaves you and Hitoshi like so much and Alyn showed up and said she couldn't sleep so I gave her some of the... experimental... stuff...." This, he said all in a huff. In the end, he looked down at the man with a furrowed brow, his mouth pursed to one side. Now that he thought about it, the explanation sounded a bit... not good.
"It worked," he added hopefully, nodding at the sleeping Alyn. "Please don't call my mother. She'll feed me to Kuma-kun."

Hitoshi felt himself plop down from the warm surface on which he had been lying. He made a quiet disgruntled noise and reached across the bed. He frowned, opening his eyes when he didn't feel his husband. Even without his glasses, he could guess from the fuzzy numbers on the alarm clock that it was far too early in the morning for Alex to be up.
Hitoshi pulled himself out of bed and to his feet, not bothering to find his glasses or get dressed beyond the pair of boxers that he had worn to bed. "Alex, what are--?" Hitoshi rounded the corner in the sitting room, and seeing that the door was open, was quite happy that he was actually wearing clothing at all.
He approached behind Alex, fully expecting to see the former headmistress -- she had taken up the habit of coming to their door in the middle of the night. Instead, Hitoshi saw a teenage boy holding what appeared to be his unconscious daughter. He inhaled sharply. "Get inside and put my daughter on the couch. Then I want you to explain slowly and coherently what the hell you're doing with her."

Akio obeyed, knowing all too well the wrath of a concerned parent. He crossed the living room, rounded the couch, and set Alyn as gently as possible onto it. She still had the jar of paste in her pocket-- he pulled this out to show it to Messers Gilespi-Meriweather.
"I was working in the lab," he said, indicating the goggles that now hung around his neck, "developing new uses for the Baratoge tea leaves. I found that--" here, he produced the jar of paste-- "when the leaves are ground to a powder and boiled, their natural chemical content can be extracted and enhanced, attributing to the easing of many ailments beyond the ability to taking the leaves in a diluted form: i.e., drinking it as a tea." He handed the jar to Hitoshi. "This paste was supposed to be a sleep aid-- still in the early stages of development, of course." He grinned nervously. "Alyn showed up and said she couldn't sleep, so I let her... test it. It's perfectly safe!" he insisted, seeing the looks he was getting from the two men. "She's just asleep-- she'll be waking up again in a few hours, no harm done. She just didn't realize that when I said it would 'put her right to sleep,' that I literally meant right to sleep. As in, effective in under a minute."
He put his hands in his pocket and shrugged his shoulders as if he were expecting a sharp cuff to his ear. "I didn't mean any harm by it... I was trying to be helpful."

Alex looked at Hitoshi, then back to Akio.
"You were working on weapons-grade soporifics after-hours? And she just... managed to..." Alex shook his head and yawned. The boy seemed to be expecting to get in trouble more for getting near a sleeping teenage girl than for anything sinister, and he didn't expect any of the Gussumaru to be capable of intrigue he couldn't catch even while completely asleep. He looked at Hitoshi.
Have someone lock up his little lab so no one stumbles into it, send him to his dorm, and deal with it later? I think he's telling the (where are your glasses?) truth.[/b] His husband was more than capable of ensuring there was really nothing wrong with Alyn.

Hitoshi pressed his hand to Alyn's forehead, quickly checking over her vital signs. Everything seemed to be fine -- her breathing was slow and steady, her brain activity indicated that she was dreaming peacefully, and nothing suggested that she was in anything less than perfect health. He pulled the blanket from the back of the couch and draped it over her.
He glanced back at Alex. It's probably nothing to worry about, though I've half a mind (they're on the bedside table, I didn't think I would need them) to assign him detention for being out after curfew. Regardless, his intentions seemed honorable enough.[/b]
Hitoshi took the jar of paste from the boy. "I'll be keeping this, if you don't mind. Since Alyn seems fine, we'll let you off with a warning. You're to return straight to your dorm." Hitoshi leveled his gaze with the boy. "And the next time you're caught doing late night science experiments, your mother will be notified."[/color]

Akio actually placed his hand to his chest and let out a soft sigh of relief. "Sir, yes sir," he chirped, giving a sharp salute before skirting out the door. He started to close it behind himself, but peeked back in after a second.
"Ehm... By the way..." He looked at something that he seemed to have written on his hand. "Speaking of my mother, she says she'll have your next shipment of tea ready by Wednesday. She wants to know if you want her to mail it or bring it in person." He had to wonder for a moment why she would need to bring tea in person, but he had learned to never ask questions where his parents were involved.
