Silvius had never quite been as fond of teaching necromancy as practicing it, and despite everything it was never his passion. That honor would always belong to history. Still, it was good to be back at his trade and out of the Athenaeum. Not that Silvius had forgotten why he was here, of course.
The professor had placed a copy of the course syllabus on each desk, and was fully prepared to slip into the first lesson, given the time. He had never believed in dilly dallying with ice breakers or such nonsense. They only had one semester, and he intended to cram their puny little minds full of as much knowledge as they could hold.
Silvius sat behind his desk, waiting patiently for the students to file in. There were still a few minutes before class, after all.

Aramis always did his best to be early to classes, especially ones with teachers he didn't know. One never knew a teacher's temperment until they had dealt with the person for a while, and for some reason the name "Korlianes" made Aramis feel really nervous. Maybe because it made him think of that little freshman he'd caught watching him on occasion. He really hoped Professor Korlianes wasn't anything like that child.
Even an old curmudeon or something would be better than an off-the-wall, overly-friendly professor who tried to 'identify' with their students. Aramis at least knew how to handle people like that.
As he slipped into the class and chose a seat nearer the back, he watched the new professor almost edgily. Well, this certainly seemed more the type to just go straight work. Aramis was almost grateful. Teachers like that didn't try to make friends and usually left him alone. He picked up the syllabus and read through it quickly, pulling out a sheet of paper and taking quick notes. Some teachers didn't like the syllubas written on, and notes smeared on paper you were forced to pull up all the time.
His notes faded a little, and with a quick glance at the clock, Aramis pulled out another sheet and started to write out his latest dream. They were turning into a very odd story... one Aramis had been horrified to learn was most definitely Lord of the Rings based. He was even dreaming in Elvish. Wasn't being named after fictional characters bad enough?

Hitoshi was always one to arrive early for class, and this was no exception. He couldn't help but feel simultaneously a little nervous and excited at finally having a real necromancy class; he didn't particularly mind Michael, but those never felt quite so much like classes as free study periods. Hitoshi was tired of refining the little things he was already capable of doing. He wanted to learn something new.
He was only the second student to arrive to class, which came as no surprise to Hitoshi. He glanced over at the blond at the back of the room. He recognized him -- the boy had a tendency to follow Carmen around -- though he couldn't remember his name. The boy was scrawling frantically on a sheet of paper. Hitoshi doubted the boy would even notice him enter.
Hitoshi took a seat in the front, directly in the center. It would give him more opportunity to speak with the professor, and it would also give him the clearest view of the board. He'd been having a harder time seeing things in the distance lately. The next time they had a break from school, he would need to take another visit to the eye doctor.
He glanced down at the syllabus. Nearly everything in the first quarter was already familiar to him, but toward the second half of the class they would begin studying things that were new to him. If he was lucky, he might even get his text book today.

Dubhiarr hurried down the hallway, not wanting to be late for class, especially with a teacher she didn't know. Necromancy sounded like it was going to be an exciting thing to study; Du had been thinking a lot about broadening her horizons beyond elemental magic and enchantments.
She poked her head into the room and sighed. Good, she was early. There were only two other people here, neither of whom she recognized. She took a seat beside the boy in the front row, leaning her elbows on her desk and her chin on her hands. She glanced over at the boy and smiled in greeting. "Hey there."

Boreas looked around the class room as he entered. He headed for the front of the room, the back was more Zephyros' area. Well that eliminated the blond boy with the love-sick look on his face. All the better. That left angry Asian boy with glasses or the girl who seemed interested in being friendly. Screw that.
Boreas sat next to the boy with glasses. He pulled his book out and waited. Making a point to ignore the boy next to him out of common courtesy.

Euros sauntered in behind his brother, taking a seat in the middle over by the window, as far away as he could get from him without actually picking one that would annoy Euros. That made him diagonal bottom-left from the cute girl that looked like a space case and top-left from the gorgeous little wounded boy that hung out with Zephyros. He even had a decent view of another pretty boy, though that one gave off an air of "I will rip out your spleen and feed it to you" that reminded him a little too much of his brother. He didn't like boys that reminded him of his brothers; granted, so did Armistice or whatever his name was, but there were plenty of other things with which to make up for that.
He leaned back in his seat and fiddled with his pencil, waiting for the teacher to begin.

Hitoshi glanced over at the purple-haired girl. He was fairly certain he had seen her around the school, though he didn't recall having any classes with her. She had the sort of happy, friendly demeanor that made him think of his sister or his cousin Rudeth. Well, sooner or later someone else would show up for her to talk to -- Alex would probably love to talk to someone new -- and she'd probably give up on talking to him.
"Good morning," he replied, looking at her over his shoulder. He was about to add something else when he saw the other boy waltz in and plop down in the seat beside him. He frowned. He hadn't been expecting this many people to show up to a necromancy class, and he certainly hadn't been expecting people to actually sit near him.
Hitoshi slid out of his jacket and draped it over the seat behind his. He'd just have to hope that Professor Korlianes didn't have too big of a problem with saving seats.

Dubhiarr smiled when the boy responded to her greeting, then watched curiously as another boy entered the room and sat down on his other side. He didn't look like anyone Du had seen before... his blue hair was definitely interesting, though. She saw the rather chilly look on his face and thought better of greeting him, speaking again to the one who sat beside her.
"I don't think we've met. I'm Dubhiarr."

Hitoshi glanced back at the girl. He was never particularly one for small talk, but it couldn't hurt to be on good terms with a few of his classmates.
"Hitoshi." He glanced up at the clock; there unfortunately were still a few minutes until class. "That's an unusual name. That's not French, is it?"

Dubhiarr grinned. "Nice meeting you. It's Scottish Gaelic. It's not my real name; I made it up myself, years ago. Hardly anyone calls me by my real name anymore, except my family. To everyone else I'm Dubhiarr, or Du for short, to those who know me well."

Alex dashed up to the door and peered his head in- oh, good, he didn't seem to be late- though people were already sitting around Hitoshi. That was weird.
He walked over and sat behind Hitoshi, next to the brown-haired fiddly one he recognized as one of Notos' brothers. (He rather wondered how many brothers that boy had, and whether they were all named after winds.)
"Sorry; I see you've got a new friend." He winked at Hitoshi, then smiled at Dubhiarr.

Hitoshi gave a slight sigh of relief. With Alex around, he could quietly excuse himself from much of the conversation. He doubted the girl would notice much.
Hitoshi turned around in his chair, giving the other boy a small, barely visible smile. "This is Dubhiarr." He glanced back at the girl, the smile slipping back into his usual blank expression. "Dubhiarr, this is Alex."
Hitoshi glanced back around the classroom. It looked like they were using one of the renovated science labs. The classroom portion was small, with only enough seats for twelve students; each row was made up of a long wooden table with seating for four. The other side of the classroom was a laboratory, with three square lab tables and four stools each. Apart from that, the room was bare. The room was made of the same dark stone as the rest of the castle. There was nothing warm or comforting about the room, but in spite of that, there was something wonderful about it.

Dubhiarr smiled and nodded to Alex. "Nice meeting you, Alex. What's your forte?"
He was awfully cute, she thought, with that odd white curly hair and those pretty green eyes... they reminded her of Stephen's. The thought made her smile. It had been a while since she'd seen him; she made a mental note to seek him out when class was over.

Alex half-smirked at Hitoshi. His introversion was adorable; Alex had trouble not thinking of it as meaning he had Hitoshi all to himself.
He turned to Dubhiarr. "Nice to meet you. I'm mostly a mentalist; you?"

"Some enchantments and some elemental magic, mostly involving water," Dubhiarr answered. "Necromancy sounds exciting, though. Healing would be a neat skill to have." Especially with everything that happens in this place, she added silently, unconsciously adjusting her scarf. "I have to wonder how difficult necromancy as a whole is, though."

A large eagle sat on the windowsill, watching the class. He'd never seen this many children in a Necromancy class before, and it irritated him.
To be fair, he never wanted the job or he wouldn't have given it up in the first place, but it still felt like an infringement on his territory. He fluttered his wings slightly and imagined ripping Korlianes' eyeballs out of his head; the man was very strange for reasons that had nothing to do with teaching positions, and he intended to keep an eye on him.

Aramis glanced up as more people gathered. There was Zeph's brother Euros... the guy with blue hair looked like another brother... that made four Aetais, right? Wasn't that how many major winds there were in Greek mythology? If there were any others, Aramis first pitied their parents and second wondered if they had reached into the Roman winds or the four lesser winds for names. Or to another branch all together.
There was Hitoshi, with Alex behind him. Names he knew mostly from being forced to sit with people by Carmen. Hitoshi was practically like, family to Carmen, but he tended to ignore Aramis. Probably didn't even know his name, which worked perfectly for the shy mage. Hitoshi's boyfriend probably had an idea of his name... Alex seemed to be the sort who would remember what Hitoshi didn't bother to.
The girl Aramis had faint ideas about. Her name escaped him, but he knew she had something to do with the Conall debacle. ...Honestly, that was about all he knew. And the bird was actually a man who was with another one of the professors. Hadn't the bird been teaching necromany before? Aramis couldn't remember, since he'd more been in the generic 'how not to accidentally mess the world up with magic' classes before. This was the first time he'd taken one of the formal classes that actually related to what he seemed most skilled with magically.
Glancing at the clock, Aramis put away his dream-story thing and tried not to fidget. Class should be starting any moment now, and he did not intend on being the one who wasn't paying attention when it did start.

Hitoshi glanced up at Dubhiarr. "I've never particularly found it difficult, but I can't speak for anyone else."
He glanced up at the window, pursing his lips. To his knowledge, there was only one overly attentive bird of prey roaming the campus. He wondered what business Michael had here. He'd never been much of a teacher when he had been in charge of the classes; it mostly consisted of him sitting alone outside and working minor enchantments on the flora. The groundskeeper was a hard one to read, even for Hitoshi. It was possible that he was just curious...but Hitoshi wasn't the sort to dismiss the possibility of an ulterior motive so easily.
The minute hand ticked forward. It was almost class time. "Is there anyone else registered for the class?" he wondered aloud. There were already more students here than there had been when Michael taught the class. Still, it seemed a bit small, and Hitoshi had been sure that Dr. Evans-Barros' nephew would be joining the class.

"Well, I'll have to find out for myself, then, I guess," Dubhiarr responded, turning to look over at Hitoshi again. When he spoke a question to the room in general, she paused and frowned. She had thought Kemekin would want to join this class, what with his abilities.
"I don't know," she answered, looking around at the others in the class, and realizing with a stab of awkwardness that she was the only girl in the room. Huh. Weird. Did girls not study necromancy as much as guys, or was it just that none of the other female mages here were interested?

Nina darted into the classroom at the last minute, tying her hair back into a ponytail as she went. She gravitated immediately toward Dubhiarr and sat down, beaming.
"Made it," she said under her breath. At least, she hoped she had. She had actually sprinted from the courtyard to the classroom so as not to be late. Now that she was sitting, she glanced around to take note of the other students. Then her eyes fell on the teacher, and she immediately averted her gaze back to Du, then to her own hands. There were traces of dirt on the cuffs of her shirtsleeves. Sighing, she rolled them to above her elbows and made a mental note to be careful next time she wanted to stretch between classes.

Dubhiarr grinned as Nina came bolting into the room and sat down near her, leaning over the back of her chair to talk to her roommate for a moment. At least she wasn't the only girl in the class anymore.
"Hey, you. Just in time. I can't wait to get started!" She grinned eagerly, then turned back toward the front of the class, watching the professor and wondering what to make of him. He was a total stranger... and the last time she'd had a class with a total stranger for a professor, he'd turned out to be a creeper, and a murderous one at that. She fought to keep her hands away from her throat at the memories. At least Creeps' replacement was alright.

The bell sounded only a moment after the blond girl plopped down in her seat. A pity; Silvius had been hoping for a chance to give detention on his first day back at Dunehelden.
Silvius slowly pulled himself to his feet, bracing his hands against his desk. "I suppose you all expect me to use this time to welcome you all into my class and to get to know you all on a personal level, while doing everything within my power to make the subject of necromancy...fun," he began, his voice low. "However, I regret to inform you all that this will not be the case."
Silvius crossed around the front of his desk, his gaze falling on the blond girl in the first row, then shifting to the violet-haired girl beside her. "I will do everything within my power to stuff your empty heads full of as much knowledge as they can hold, and when it feels as though you can remember nothing else..." Silvius leaned forward against the table in front of the two girls, the corners of his lips turning up in a sadistic smirk, his voice dark and smooth, "I will force you to learn more."
He straightened his back, staring down his nose imperiously at the two boys in the front row. Ah, here he could sense ambition. They might go far -- should they have the brains to back it up. The one in the middle looked intense, as though he were trying to mentally pry every piece of necromantic knowledge from him. The one on the right was far less readable. His expression was frosty; merely looking him in the eyes seemed to make the temperature in the room drop several degrees. He raised an eyebrow slightly. Curious... Very curious.
"This class will most certainly not be fun. It will test your limits." His hand trailed idly along the wooden table. "You will be miserable. You will try your hardest, and yet you will fail. You will doubt yourself. You will consider dropping the class--perhaps for a nice little divination course," he mocked, looking up at the blond boy at the back of the room. His eyes narrowed. "Some of you might even go through with it.
"And for those of you that already feel as though you are in over your heads..." Silvius waved toward the door. "By all means, it is not yet too late to readjust your schedules."
Silvius paused, his dark gaze combing the room. He crossed his arms over his chest. "And if I'm not mistaken," he drawled, "we are one student short."

Alex's eyebrow quirked upwards very slightly, his gaze otherwise neutral.
Thought so very well of himself, did he? How nice of him to give his entire grading strategy up front like that; Hitoshi would do very well in this class. Alex himself, having no pretensions towards becoming more than a dabbler in necromancy, was planning on giving the man every reason to ignore him so that he could concentrate on subjects he gave a damn about.
...If he could, given what he needed to ask the man.
